Sumo Deadlifts and Misc Mayhem 12 15 2016

Today is not only the anniversary of my first daughter’s birth, but the anniversary of the death of one my heroes and mentors, the late Christopher Hitchens. Reflecting the cyclical nature of life itself, December 15th brings joy and sorrow both. The day continues like any other as the Earth keeps spinning and orbiting no matter who is born or who dies. And like most days, I headed to the gym.

Front Squats

  • 185 x 6
  • 175 x 4

I knew I had more than 4 reps in me at 185, even though that’s all I was able to muster the last time I did Front Squats. So while I would typically reset from a failed 5-rep attempt, I tried it again and as you can see, it went quite well, however it definitely took something out of me as I couldn’t match the 6 reps with 95% of the load.

Sumo Deadlifts

I’m still working from a 360-lb 1RM, and today’s goal was at least 10 reps at or above 85%.

  • 310 x 3
  • 330 x 2
  • 330 x 2
  • 315 x 3

I forgot to trim my fingernails, which is not unusual for me, and I managed to claw my upper thighs pretty well on a few reps, drawing a little blood.

Sumo Pulls of Blocks

  • 285 x 4, 3, 3

I did a couple of sets of hanging leg raises to finish up. This was a tough workout and I really started feeling it around 3 or 4 hours later. I’ve spent the majority of the day seriously fatigued.
