Hell of a time to become a Fan

I saw a stat on the final game of the 2020 Mets season today, before it became a blowout and I moved on to other things. It showed the Mets performance in recent years and I had to check my own blog to confirm when I took up fandom. As it turns out, I started following the Mets during the off-season before the 2017 Opening Day. So I came home to my childhood team just in time to see 4 years of lousy performance.

I remember during the 2015 season I peeked at the standings, having no team to follow that year, and was stunned to see the Mets atop the NL East. I think I posted something about it on Facebook, but I didn’t start watching baseball until the post-season, which had been my pattern since departing from the Florida Marlins in 2012. I found an old blog post from the end of 2012 where I reflected on my failed attempt to become an Angels fan. I recalled my geographic entry into this world in the borough of Manhattan and my childhood love of the Mets. It looked like I was going to make a run at being a fan, but it never materialized. Three long years without a team to call my own, but I rooted for the Mets in the World Series only to see them lose to a uniquely talented Kansas City team.

I don’t remember 2016 exactly, but I have to assume I continued in the pattern of watching the occasional regular season game that caught my eye, looking for a team I could latch onto, and picking a team that struck my fancy to root for each post-season series. My blog is silent in the Baseball category until the start of the 2017 season where I declared an oath of fealty to the Metropolitans.

Now that I’ve somehow made peace with the Miami Marlins, I have two teams. It’s an odd spot to be in emotionally, and I’m not sure it’s sustainable. But with the Marlins heading into the post-season for the first time since that glorious 2003 season, and having what looks like a fish tank stocked with young talent, and the Mets having new ownership coming in for 2021, next season could be very interesting for both teams, so maybe having a double decker sandwich made up of these two NL East rivals could bring some serious excitement starting Feb 27, 2021 in Port St Lucie, FL.

Assuming COVID-19 allows that to happen, which is a big assumption.
